🥂Cheers to Living in Nature
Why My Nervous System Chose Chickens Over Convenience
If you’re doing all the things — consistent exercise, healthy diet, eliminating toxins —
and you still aren’t feeling completely well…
this is something to consider.
Our cities and neighborhoods embody the fake, idyllic, facade that everyone is socialized to view as desirable.
These homes, parks, restaurants, and shopping centers present as luxury, but in reality, they’re plastic.
It’s just a fact that the human body does not thrive in a stuffy concrete setting.
There’s no getting around it. No pretending that you’re unique and can live outside of nature with no consequences.
This became shocking clear while Levi and I were visiting my old college town, the place where we met and spent a lot of our first 2 and ½ years together.
While living there, I was numb to the underlying stressors of this artificial environment.
This constant, low-grade physiological stress, I think, was a huge contributor to my binge eating and drinking habits, excess inflammation, and poor behavior choices.
When I moved into my dream apartment while simultaneously traveling to Levi’s house in the forest every weekend, I realized the drastic difference. Maybe that dream, brand-new apartment community is actually not the dream at all.
I traded in all the shops, restaurants, fitness studios, parks, and apartment amenities just steps outside my front door for a home with no Wi-Fi, no crisp white walls, and no Doordash or Uber in available range for miles.
And now I’m a nature girl. Bare feet in the grass, tending the garden, cooking every meal at home, throwing worms to my chickens, and cuddling with my three dirt-covered dogs in bed.
This all coming from a girl who grew up disliking all animals… even dogs! I dreamed of that sterile, brand-new apartment lifestyle with never a dog hair or dirty paw print on the wood floors in sight.
But when you feel how happy your nervous system is when you live outside of our modern conveniences and then experiences the insane health benefits that result from your happy nervous system… it’s a no brainer.
Our conversation today is asking you to consider whether that new prescription from your doctor, or eating that entire bag of chips is actually what you need…
Or can it be as simple as spending more time in spaces where nature is left alone?
Enjoy the conversation and cheers! 🥂
What we drank in this episode: Cucumber Refresher Recipe
We mention that the week leading up to this recording we made all these recipes with a whole chicken.
Pre-recording dinner recipe: Spring Pesto Pasta
💚🍋 Spring Pesto Pasta
I simply followed this recipe!
The only difference is that I made homemade pasta, of course.
This meal is so light, bright, and refreshing! 10/10
In Episode 9 of Cheers to Growth, we’re unpacking the sneaky stressors of modern living and how nature gave us a peace we didn’t know we were missing.
